Those daydreams or moments of imagination where you explore something unknown and unadmittable even to your conscious self, may be trying to show you something. Are you ready to listen?

Sometimes fantasies can be surprisingly odd, twisted, taboo or dark. They can surprise us, take us off guard, be vivid and somatic.

We are taught that fantasies are silly, dangerous or wrong.

But what if our fantasies were guides to our heart’s desires and innermost needs? They may present in a twisted, uncomfortable way, yet hold glimmers of truth within them.

Let’s take a common thread of fantasy around having a sexual encounter with someone you know, whether through friends, work or some other familiar space. It can feel exciting, wrong, taboo, scary or pleasurable, sometimes all at once!

You may be questioning your attraction to this person you are not supposed to be attracted to or questioning why you’re having a particular fantasy in a particular inappropriate setting! Perhaps the fantasy is not about the other person or your feelings towards them at all, perhaps it’s your body and unconscious mind letting you know there is an unfulfilled need.

That need could be for attention and the feelings of validation and excitement they bring, which we may not be receiving in our relationship or from ourself. The need could be for intimacy and close sacred touch.

Perhaps it’s related to relationships and desiring a sense of closeness they bring. This could have little to do with sexuality and be more about an ache for true connection.

It could also be your body’s way of saying you need a spark to energize you, that you’re feeling dull and uninspired. Few things are as energizing as the tension that comes with sexual attraction!

Or perhaps you have a fantasy of something disturbing, like hurting someone. These may be as common as other fantasies, yet we are quick to dismiss them and turn away from the appalling discomfort of having such negative thoughts.

If you were to look at the fantasy of hurting someone with the acceptance of your shadow, what might it share with you? Perhaps you feel harmed in some way and want to seek justice, even if it’s in the form of harm returned. Maybe there is a buildup of energy that is looking for a release and the only seemingly safe way to do that in the moment is to redirect it through a fantasy of exerting your power?

Maybe a current situation is reminding you of a past wrongdoing, and the need is to bring some sense of closure to feelings of powerlessness you once felt. Perhaps the person you fantasize about hurting reminds you of a wound or aspect of yourself that you do not like or accept and the ego is lashing out in defense?

The need to release resentment, anger and frustration can simmer under the surface and be lost deep in our bodies for years, without us fully realizing the impact it is having on our mental state or perspective of the world. As humans, we are very good at suppressing our emotions. Yet they come out in small ways like fantasies or dreams.

In these moments, it can be difficult to ask questions, to turn the puzzle upside down and around. Every single fantasy does not need analysis. Yet like dreams, when they have a recurring theme, there is likely something we are being asked to look at and address.

Just as our body is wise and looks to rebalance, our mind and spirit also look for ways to let go, release, recalibrate and feel fulfilled. The fantasies which come uninvited to our minds may be guides to those needs which we have been ignoring or denying.

Importantly, we do not need to take them at their obvious face value or act out on them, but we do need to dig a bit and see what message is under the rubble of our fleeting thoughts.

So, the next time a particular flavor of fantasy continues to arise, try asking some questions about what you are seeing and feeling and what it may be asking you to care for within yourself or in your relationships around you.

There may just be a surprising insight waiting for you.
